Nice Campground near Lake Tahoe

William Kent is just a few miles south of Tahoe City across from the Sunnyside Resort on Highway 89. Most sites are well forested with a decent amount of privacy and space, however, some sites do back up to homes. As with anywhere in Lake Tahoe during the summer, this place is very busy on weekends. We managed to grab a really nice site reserving just a few days ahead. The campground isn't on the lake, but there is a day use beach area across the street that is a part of William Kent. It is a rocky beach, so I would recommend bringing chairs if you're planning on hanging out here for the day. There are a couple of picnic tables if lunch by the beach sounds good to you. If you're wanting a true beautiful Tahoe sandy beach though, I recommend driving a little further south on 89 to Meeks Bay (link). This beach can get pretty crowded on a nice day, but it is totally worth it! If you're in the mood for some cycling, there is a great walking/biking trail that runs along hwy 89 and into Tahoe City. Being so close to town is great, especially for those of us that are keen to forgetting things! There's a grocery store, gas station, and a few restaurants right in Tahoe City. And if you don't feel like running into town, there's a little convenient store next to the William Kent beach area. I also recommend going rafting while you're in Tahoe City, and it's hard not to when it looks so tempting seeing everyone out there when you're driving into the campground! It was really relaxing with a few little rapids to keep it interesting and fun. And unless you're up for blowing $35/person on renting a raft at Trukee River Rafting Mountain Air Sports (yellow paddles) or Trukee River Raft Co. (orange paddles), run across the street to the gas station (they also have some at the grocery store) where you can buy your own for a fraction of the price and they'll let you blow it up using their tire pump for free :o) What an amazing deal...if only we saw this before we rented a raft! Grab some lunch, beers, and a few squirt guns at the grocery store and you're good to go!
